Come 1st July 2021 rental properties will have to meet the healthy homes standards.  Perhaps now is the time to give your rental the medical check-ups they need now!

All Private landlords must comply with the standards within 90 days of any new or renewed tenancy after 1st July 2021 as well as all boarding houses.  There are exceptions to the healthy homes standards, click here to check if you fall into any of the categories of exemptions.

There are more changes to come to the healthy home’s standards in the next few years.  From 1st July 2023 all Kāinga Ora and Community Housing Provider houses must be compliant and from 1st July 2024 ALL rental homes must be compliant.

You can find the Rental health checklist here, where you can answer questions about each of the standards:

  1. Heating
  2. Insulation
  3. Ventilation
  4. Moisture ingress & drainage
  5. Draught stopping

There are lots of helpful resources in the checklist to provide you with the information you need to give your rental property a medical check-up before you enter into another tenancy agreement.
