IT consultants slow to embrace "More for Less"

Date: 12 July 2012

Most businesses are required to upgrade the computer hardware and software every 3 - 5 years. Apart from the upfront cost of the upgrade, whatever configuration adopted, it also locks in an overhead for the next 3 - 5 years.

We are now seeing examples of upgrade proposals from the local IT industry, where cloud based services need to be considered for a business, to lower IT costs and improve IT outcomes. More for less.

Once again a pattern is emerging. Some in the local IT industry have fully embraced the opportunity and routinely build cloud based services (hosted) options into any written upgrade proposal.

Disappointingly we have seen proposals that ignore the opportunity.

We recommend business owners put the blow torch on any proposal. Get a second opinion.  Ask around and benchmark your upgrade plan against another business.

Having talked to numerous Marlborough businesses about their experience so far the feedback is;

  1. cost savings can be found,
  2. some IT consultants in town are ahead of others,
  3. change is not without risk but that risk can be reduced,
  4. and the cost of renting fibre is falling.
